Printing Your Way

TidBits Info © Lucy Page

I keep seeing print option complaints. I never use PhotoImpact's print options...not ever. You can obtain first class photo's the way you want right from the workspace. Alas, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind to obtain satisfactory results. I am going to give you a quick overview of the process. Be sure to study the pictures; they convey an undestanding of the process better than any words could.

New image picSay you have 5, 6 or more odd shape pictures (ufo's too!) that you want to print on one standard photo sheet. The photo sheet is approximately the same as a standard letter size sheet. Open the letter size page in PI at the printing resolution (what ever resolution you want). The first red arrows show where to set the paper size and the bottom one shows the resolution settings. 360dpi is a decent printing resolution.

Picture showing sizesOpen your picture...select all...convert to object...drag to the first sheet at the printing resolution new image window you choose. Look at the size of both pictures. I did not resize the big photo. That is the difference in 92 dpi and 360dpi at work. See the difference? Understanding the resolution is essential to good printing.

comparison pictureYou can resize, fix, whatever on your printing sheet. But remember that if you made something at 92dpi and you try to make them bigger, they are not going to print as well. I try to make most of my projects at 360dpi minimum...usually 600. You can alway optimize, but you can not iincrease the resolution . Look at the world in the example. The little world was its original size when I added it to the sheet, it wasn't big enough so I resized it. Since I did it at 92dpi, I don't expect it to print at the same quality as the picture. The picture should be photo quality, but the world will not.

I hope you have gleemed something useful from my little tips. These are little tidbits of information that I wished I had known when I started using PhotoImpact. Why? Because I did a really nice painting at 92 resolution and it is only good for the web. It prints really ugly!
